Finally catching up with the high-tech world in which we live by starting a blog! The subject, however, is a little less high tech. My wife and I are moving to Central Asia in late July 2012 to teach English but before we do we decided to take a month and a half long cross country motorcycle trip. In 2011 I bought a $700 1985 Honda Shadow 500 with only 6600 miles on it. Since we are leaving the States in a few months I didn’t want to buy a bigger bike for the trip. If I spent more money on a bigger bike I would still end up working on it and to get it ready and to make it more comfortable. I should also add that I like to tinker and modify things, so the idea of taking a basic small bike and turning it into a fun rat-bike tourer was really appealing. So I spent the winter getting the bike ready and building custom parts. It was a fun project and I’m pretty happy with the result. My hope with this blog is to document the preparations and actual trip. Provided all goes well I hope it will provide inspiration to others who might be thinking about trying something similar. Enjoy the read!
